Curious about getting an eyeliner tattoo? Here's what I learned.

A Headline Inc customer shares her story

Firstly, let's be clear that I'm no make up queen. My daily routine consists of face serum, darken brows and lash line, lip gloss and go. Mascara if I remember. Definitely no contouring. This is not my make up table:

My eyeliner is not applied like this with a powder and carefully dampened brush specifically selected for the lash line. There is no gold eyeshadow, unless someone is getting married or we're off to a ball (like, seriously glam events, people).

I'm 50, and my lashes needed some help

Besides which, I've just turned 50 and applying eyeliner accurately and being sure there aren't big gaps or jagged edges is a visual challenge. Failing eyesight is a blessing as far as obsessing over your own wrinkles goes (like, you can't... if you can't see them, do they even exist??) but the technical skill of a perfect slick of liquid eyeliner is devastatingly, a thing of the past. All those years conquering the ideal eyeliner application, only to lose the ability to see your own lash line. My vision is a little like this:

So, although this is not me (thanks, stock photography!) - this is the situation we were working with. Good bones, great smile, decent lash length... zero lash line.

There's a reason some older women look better

Sometimes it's genetics. Usually, confidence is key. But a good lash line is a great asset.

Check out this stunner. Her 40's are behind her, but she's dynamic and beautiful. A few lines and silver hair aren't a challenge when your eyeliner is en pointe.

Why I chose Headline Inc

What an easy choice! Would I choose a random tattoo artist, or would I book with multi-award winning make up artist, Abbie Gardiner?

Exactly. I called the only woman I trust implicitly with my face. Over the years she's done my make up many times and I always felt like a queen. When your eyeliner won't be coming off for a few years, you want to know you will love the look.

At Headline Inc an eyeliner tattoo is a semi permanent cosmetic tattoo, done by a superb make up artist, using top quality numbing gels and quality European inks. This means the eyeliner tattoo lasts well, and won't fade to blue or orange with time!

What it's like getting an eyeliner tattoo

An eyeliner tattoo is done in two sessions to obtain a clean, lasting effect. Abbie uses a numbing gel first and talks you through how the session will go, and also discusses exactly the kind of effect you want.

Because she's a professional and highly experienced make up artist, you won't get a thick block of black, or a huge cats tail flick. Abbie works between your lashes and right against your lash line, so your eyeliner tattoo is very subtle but effectively darkens and enhances your lashes.

Once the numbing gel is in effect, Abbie makes absolutely tiny scratches on your lash line by hand, to allow the ink beneath the skin. She works carefully and consults with you as she goes. This feels scratchy but is not like a tattoo needle. I didn't feel like it was uncomfortable enough to ask for a break, and it definitely wasn't painful.

After both sessions, I was given Vitamin A cream to help soothe and heal my skin, and my eyelids were slightly puffy that afternoon but normal by morning. They felt tender to touch the first two days but quickly settled down.

The eyeliner tattoo result

Perfection. No one noticed that it had been done, and that I no longer needed to apply eyeliner each day. My eyes were far more striking than before and people began remarking on my 'lovely eyelashes'... Mmm-hmmm... its isn't the lashes that changed people!

Most importantly, I felt like I "had my own eyes back" - my lash line looked like it used to, dark and framing my eyes nicely! Now, applying eyeliner is a fun addition, not a 'repair job' - and it's easy because the perfect eyeliner line is already there, so I just add a smudge to extend it, or add a flick to the corner, and away I go.

Thank you Abbie, for as always, applying the perfect eyeliner to suit my face - only this time it didn't wash off before bed! Two years later and I'm still absolutely loving it!
